W trakcie przeszło dziewięciomiesięcznych obrzędów Anneliese niszczyła krzyże, lewitowała, a także odznaczała się olbrzymią siłą fizyczną. Ostatecznie niedożywienie oraz skrajne wycieńczenie organizmu (skręt mięśni szyjnych pod dziwnym kątem powodował niemożność spożywania jakichkolwiek pokarmów) spowodowane opętaniem doprowadziło do śmierci zaledwie 23 letniej dziewczyny.

Anneliese was diagnosed with psychosis caused by temporal lobe epilepsy and started taking medications.
