Cassiodorus, Roman writer, statesman, and monk, b. about ; d. about His full name was Flavius Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus Senator, the last being a surname. Although of Syrian ancestry, his family had been for at least three generations one of the most important in Bruttium (Southern Italy). His great-grandfather successfully defended Bruttium during the Vandal invasion of ; his grandfather was signally favored by Valentinian III and Aetius, but chose to retire early from his honorable career, and his father went through all the degrees of the magistracy, at length being made praetorian prefect and a patrician by Theodoric.

Flavius Magnus Aurelius Cassiodorus originated from a Roman senatorial family in Scyllacium (Squillace, Calabria), southern Italy, shortly after the fall of the western Roman Empire in Following his father's footsteps, Cassiodorus entered a career in the civil service of the Ostrogothic kingdom of Italy, beginning as quaestor in at a young age (as a result, some estimate his birth to be earlier, in or even ). After climbing through the Gothic bureaucracy,Cassiodorus availed himself of the fall of Boethius in to become magister officium, head of the civil service of Theodoric the Great, Ostrogoth king of Italy. After Theodoric's death in , Cassiodorus stayed on as the head of the bureaucracy for his daughter Amalsontha, regent on behalf of her young son king Athalaric. Sixth-century statesman, author, and scholar; b. Scyllacium, Calabria, c. ; d. Vivarium, c. Of a Calabrian family in the Ostrogothic civil service, Cassiodorus received an excellent classical education, entered the employment of the Ostrogothic kings, and became quaestor and secretary () to theodoric the great (&#x;), consul (), and a little later master of of-fices, the equivalent of prime minister. In this position he worked for a reconciliation between the conquered Romans and the barbarians. In he was made a praetorian prefect by Athalaric and under Vitiges received the title of patrician.
After the Byzantine invasions of northern Italy, the Ostrogothic kingdom crumbled and Cassiodorus attempted to found a school for theology in Rome under Pope Agapetus (&#x;); failing, he retired to his villa at Vivarium in Calabria. There he founded a monastery whose monks devoted themselves to studying and copying books of both sacred and profane learning. Though not a monk himself, he followed the religious services as patron.
