| Jesús Juárez Mazo más conocido como Jesús Malverde (24 de diciembre de , Sinaloa, México - 3 de mayo de , Sinaloa, México) fue un bandido de cabello negro y ojos azabache, del Estado de Sinaloa que habría sido salteador de caminos y es venerado como santo por muchos, aunque su existencia real está discutida. La Iglesia Católica no se le reconoce a su estatua oficial de santo, porque afirma que no tiene datos concretos sobre tener una vida virtuosa, ni los milagros que habría realizado, pero su culto se ha extendido por todo Sinaloa y fuera de él. Se le han levantado varias capillas: la primera de ellas se construyó en Culiacán; también las hay en Tijuana, Badiraguato,1 Chihuahua, en la carretera que lleva a la ciudad de Aldama,2 Colombia y Los Ángeles.3 Malverde es conocido como "El Bandido Generoso" o "El Ángel de los Pobres";4 también como "El Santo de los Narcos". Era una especie de Robin Hood,"Malverde" era un apodo derivado de "el Mal Verde", dado que realizaba sus asaltos entre la espesura verde del monte, también hay una capilla en México DF en la colonia Doctores.

Many different cultures at different times past and present have a Robin Hood figure, such as Oleska Dovbush of Ukraine, Juraj Janosik of Slovakia, Nakamura Jirokichi of Japan, Scotty Smith from South Africa, Salvatore Guiliano of Italy and Phoolan Devi from India. As I hail from the UK, every child here knows the story of Robin Hood and he has been immortalized in many different Hollywood films featuring some of Hollywoods top stars. All have similar traits in that they rob from the rich and distribute their loot to the poor. But in nearly every old legend of this type, there is little evidence that they ever existed. Jesus Malverde is venerated particularly in Sinaloa and particularly by Narcos. Here we examine his story.

In June , an officer with the Utah Highway Patrol stopped a vehicle for having illegally tinted windows. Upon making contact with the driver, the officer noticed the overwhelming odor of an air freshener coming from the interior of the vehicle. Then, he saw four air fresheners inside the passenger compartment and a small pendant hanging from one of the dashboard air vents. The officer immediately recognized the image on the pendant as that of the Mexican folk hero Jesus Malverde. He knew from previous training that many Mexican drug traffickers acknowledged Malverde as their patron saint. In addition, he had personally encountered items bearing Malverde's image in 6 or 7 of about 20 other successful drug-interdiction stops. Immediately suspicious, the officer requested and received consent to search the vehicle.
