Elmer Bischoff () is perhaps best known as a founder, along with Richard Diebenkorn and David Park, of the Bay Area Figuration, the painting style that emerged in San Francisco in the early s, which combined the gestural immediacy of abstract expressionism, with a narrative subject matter. Born and raised in Berkeley, CA, Bischoff showed interest in art from a young age. He enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley as an art major, studying with professors such as Erle Loran and Margaret Peterson who would influence not only his approach to painting, but also to teaching. He went on to receive his MFA from Berkeley, though his early career as an artist was cut short by the entry of the United States into WWII. Bischoff enlisted as an officer in the Air Force in and served until - a period during which he could make art only intermittently but nonetheless had a profound effect on him.

Elmer Nelson Bischoff (July 9, – March 2, ) was a visual artist in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bischoff, along with Richard Diebenkorn and David Park, was part of the post-World War II generation of artists who started as abstract painters and found their way back to figurative art.

Elmer Bischoff, second child of John and Elna (n&#;e Nelson) Bischoff, grew up in Berkeley, California, the second-generation Californian son of a father of German descent and a mother of mixed Swedish-Ecuadoran origin.

He entered the University of California, Berkeley, in September , completing his master's degree in May , and immediately started teaching art at Sacramento High School (–41). During his years at university, one teacher had influenced him most: the highly independent-minded Margaret Peterson, whose total dedication to her teaching, and insistence on the ethical value of art, were to have a great impact on the artist Elmer Bischoff would be. World War II, however, was to change Bischoff's life. In , he served as a lieutenant colonel in intelligence services in England, stationing near Oxford, and only coming back to the US in November
