Keluarga beliau merupakan antara keluarga yang paling berpengaruh di Johor, semenjak lewat abad ke 19 dan sehingga hari ini. Ayahanda beliau, Allahyarham Dato&#; Jaafar Haji Mohamed () merupakan Menteri Besar Johor pertama dan pengasas sistem pentadbiran Kerajaan Johor, seperti mana yang wujud sehingga hari ini. Berbangsa Melayu dari keturunan Bugis dan berasal dari Daik. Beliau dilahirkan pada tahun di Teluk Belanga, Singapura, dan mendapat pendidikan Melayu dan Inggeris. Beliau adalah berketurunan Bendahara Paduka Raja Johor dan Bendahara Kerajaan Melaka.
Ibu Dato Onn Jaafar ialah Hanim Rogayah seorang wanita Timor Dekat berketurunan Turki. Beliau mempunyai 15 orang adik beradik lelaki dan perempuan yang seibu sebapa, sebapa dan juga seibu sahaja. Adik beradik sebapa ialah Mustafa, Rogayah, Aminah, Fatimah, Khadijah, Abdullah dan Dara. Adik beradik seibu beliau ialah Ungku Abdul Aziz yang merupakan Menteri Besar Johor sehingga Perang Dunia Kedua, Ungku Abdul Hamid iaitu ayah kepada Professer Ungku Aziz dan Syed Ali iaitu ayah kepada Professer Doktor Syed Hussein Al-Attas dan Do

In various fields, Dato’ Onn was among the prominent journalists during the rise of debates on Malay nationalism. He was an author and newspaper columnist for Warta Malaya and Lembaga Malaya, where his critically acclaimed views consistently captivated the public's attention for several years. Among his notable contributions were 'Selamat Johor' in and the translation of 'Hikayat Seribu Satu Malam' titled AL FA LAILA WALAILA. The sharpness of his writing continued through the weekly newspaper KRITIK under his leadership. He was a skilled and eloquent orator, and during his tenure as a Member of Parliament before his passing, he was highly respected and esteemed by fellow members of the Dewan Rakyat.

Nama Dato’ Onn bin Jaafar tidak asing lagi dalam sejarah tanah air kita, terutamanya apabila berbicara berkenaan tokoh-tokoh nasionalis Melayu zaman pra-kemerdekaan negara. Dalam penulisan pendek ini, penulis akan berbicara berkenaan biografi ringkas tokoh nasionalis ini dan juga berkenaan tokoh-tokoh pemimpin negara dan tokoh sarjana dalam kalangan ahli keluarga besar mereka.
Tokoh yang dilahirkan pada tanggal di Johor Bahru ini merupakan anak ketiga kepada pasangan Dato’ Jaafar bin Hj. Muhammad iaitu Menteri Besar Johor pertama dengan isterinya yang bernama Rugayah Hanim, seorang wanita berbangsa Turki Kaukasan. Oleh itu, Onn berdarah kacukan Melayu Bugis-Turki Kaukasan dari jurai kedua-dua belah ibu bapanya.
Onn dijadikan anak angkat oleh Sultan Ibrahim al-Masyhur, Sultan Johor ketika itu dan dihantar belajar ke England. Sekembalinya beliau ke tanah air, beliau menuntut pula di Maktab Melayu Kuala Kangsar, Perak. Beliau kemudiannya berkhidmat di bawah kerajaan Johor pada zaman kolonial British dan zaman pendudukan tentera Jepun dengan pelbagai jawatan dan jabatan. Beliau juga pernah bekerja sebagai wartawan dan pengarang di sebuah syarikat akhbar dan majalah tempatan.

Abstract
Written by Shaharom Husain, this biography book aims to record as accurately as possible the experience and behavior of Dato' Onn in the struggle to liberate his country from British colonial rule without deify leader. It is undeniable that there has been many books written about Dato Onn' but most of them have a specific purpose and a desire to protect the interests of certain parties.
