Ai-Ling Louie is the author of the children’s classic, Yeh-Shen; A Cinderella Story from China (Philomel/Putnam). Her children’s biography series, "Amazing Asian Americans" currently contains three books: "Vera Wang, Queen of Fashion", "Yo-Yo and Yeou-Cheng Ma, Finding Their Way", and her book, the first children's biography published in the US about a South Asian American, "Astronaut Kalpana Chawla, Reaching for the Stars." In December , "Patsy Mink, Mother of Title 9" will be published. All her books are for the elementary school child. The reading level is 4th grade

Sometimes fairy tales can be strange, and they&#;re not always easy to read aloud. Take the Cinderella tale ofYeh-Shen, for example. In it you&#;ll find a chief with two wives, several untimely deaths, and magical fish bones. So&#;not your average modern-day story.
As adults, we may worry our kids will find these tales too weird and scary. In our experience, though, this doesn&#;t tend to happen. We&#;re the ones squirming in our seats as we read, while the kids hardly bat an eye.
But we don&#;t just think fairy tales are fine to read to kids. We actually believe they are important to share with your children because they give us glimpses of greater things. (The realones, that is&#;not modernized re-tellings.)
This ancient version of Cinderella retold by Ai-Ling Louie actually predates the oldest known European version of the classic tale. Kids who are familiar with the European tale will recognize many familiar story elements. (Magical fish bones aside.) It&#;s fun to compare versions!

Yeh-Shen: A Cinderella Story from China
As part of the &#;Cinderella Around the World&#; series, I have chosen to look at Yeh Shen: A Cinderella Story from China. Yeh-Shen, (also known as Ye Xian 叶限) is one of the world&#;s first Cinderella stories, and was published in the 9th century (!!!!) in an anthology of stories called Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang. Yeh Shen: A Cinderella Story From China is the adaptation of this ancient fairy tale, retold by Ai-Ling Louie and wonderfully illustrated by Ed Young. It would be fun to have your kids illustrate the story, after listening to you read it (though I might skip the last line).
The main story has familiar themes and characters: a poor girl who works hard, a wicked stepmother,the ugly, mean stepsister, a magical helper (in this case a kind fish with big, golden eyes), royalty looking for a wife, and a lost, precious slipper. Yeh Shen is a kind girl, who shares her small handful of rice with a magical fish in a nearby pond.
