Is your language elliptical? Do you use words that are viewed as inappropriate? When do you use such diction? With whom? At what moments? What need does this fulfill? Why do you feel it necessary to fulfill this need? What other languages have you studied? To what extent has this impacted your other language? In what ways do you see language as a part of your identity? How do you feel about your first language? When do you use it? With whom do you use it? I wrote the following linguistic autobiography in the Fall of as a reflective task for the linguistic seminar &#;Principles of Language Learning and Teaching&#; taught by Nelleke Van Deusen-Scholl.

 

I am from Málaga, Spain, and my native language is Spanish. I began learning English in primary school and continued through high school. The main focus of the classroom was grammar study with priority given to reading and writing. I was not the best student back then, but English was the subject I enjoyed most. I have an aunt who lives in Massachusetts, and I spent a month with her and her family in the States at age For the next few years I continued to visit them during the summer and while I was able to understand English, I was reticent to actually speak it except when needed. I also took Latin for two years (which I really enjoyed but didn´t truly remember when I had to take my PhD required Latin course two summers ago). I also wanted to take French in high school, but the school decided that my overall grades were not good enough and that I should take an “easier” subject. The People and Places That Encompass My Linguistic History

My linguistic practices are a reflection of an eclectic group of influences.  The most obvious contributor to my linguistic style is my geographic location. It is no secret that I speak with a &#;New York&#; accent. I was born and raised in Queens, one of the most culturally diverse places in the United States.  Both of my parents were also raised in Queens and, therefore, were the original sources of my dialect. However, my grandparents have very diverse linguistic histories. I have added some diversity by traveling the United State and Europe and living in other states for short periods of time.

My ancestors on my father&#;s side included people from all over Ireland. My paternal grandmother was born in Limerick, Ireland. She was very poor and stopped attending school in the eighth grade in order to go to work and help support her family. &#;Grandma Hickey&#; spoke fluent Gaelic as a child but has since forgotten most of the language due to lack of use and exposure. She moved to the United States at the age of sixteen and began working to send money back to Ireland. She lived in a convent for a few years

Linguistic Autobiography

I began my life as a bilingual speaker of Italian and English. My mother, a bilingual speaker of Sicilian/Italian and English spoke to me predominantly in Sicilian/Italian while my father, monolingual, spoke to me in English. For him it was very important that we be raised speaking more than just English. So although rural Connecticut did not offer a community of Italian speakers, my parents made an effort to spend time in the North End of Boston, which did.

By age 5 or 6 I spoke both Sicilian/Italian and English proficiently. However, for lack of a community with whom to speak Italian, my mother stopped speaking it at home and I began to lose command of the language. Today, despite travel to Italy and intensive formal education in Italian, English is still the language in which I feel most confident expressing myself without fear of error and for that reason the only language that I consider to be my native language at this point.

English factors greatly into my cultural identity as an American; however, my mixed-language childhood created a connection to my Italian heritage that was nearly as strong. As my Italian flagged, I became acutely aware of
