Choreographer William Forsythe, artistic director of the Frankfurt Ballet since , has brought about a shift of paradigms in contemporary dance. The vocabulary of his choreographies re-defines body, space, time and movement. »Improvisation Technologies«, originally intended for the professional use of the dancers of the Frankfurt Ballet, for the first time offers the opportunity to gain a different and unique access to the work of a major contemporary choreographer.
Divided into 60 video chapters, the CD-ROM is made up of lecture demonstrations in which William Forsythe shows the essential principles of his improvisation techniques. Dance sequences, performed specially by Frankfurt Ballet members Christine Bürkle, Noah D. Gelber, Thomas McManus and Crystal Pite, can be called up as further illustrations. Also included is a document of improvisation in practice: Forsythe's performance of »Solo«, filmed in by Thomas Lovell Balogh.&
William Forsythe: Improvisation Technologies – The Lectures
With the CD-ROM Improvisation Technologies. A Tool for the Analytical Dance Eye, William Forsythe created a unique tool for understanding his improvisational movement language over 20 years ago. However, the CD-ROM, first published in , has been unplayable on current computer systems for years. Forsythe Productions and the ZKM are therefore now presenting a newly developed online version of the project, with which central contents of Improvisation Technologies will be made freely accessible worldwide on a long-term basis. The website will be launched with a panel discussion with William Forsythe and Noé Soulier, moderated by Margit Rosen.

The CD-ROM William Forsythe, Improvisation Technologies—A Tool for the Analytical Dance Eye, published in , was designed as a pedagogical tool for the prolific choreographer. At the same time, the implementation as CD-ROM was paradigmatic in how technology at the time could be used to communicate principles of choreography and dance and was widely circulated in dance and dance studies communities. The interactive CD was developed, produced, programmed, and published by ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany in cooperation with the Deutsches Tanzarchiv Köln.
In lockstep with the baked-in obsolescence of digital technology, the CD-ROM has become inaccessible as Macintosh OS9 and supported hardware started fading away already in the first ten years after its publication.
As part of the development of a digital time-capsule, a video capture of the CD-ROM makes the content accessible and allows to understand the design and interaction of the original media. All materials of the original publication are documented, including the accompanying booklet with essays and additional information. The video as posted on YouTube i
