Introduction
To prevent British soldiers from conducting further attacks on the countryside after the march to Lexington and Concord, 20, provincial militiamen encircle Boston in the spring of The Charlestown peninsula and Dorchester Heights, commanding both the city of Boston and Boston harbor, lie abandoned. Hoping to make the British "masters of these heights," General Gage, in conference with Major Generals William Howe, Henry Clinton, and John Burgoyne, plans to seize the neglected positions before the colonists do so. News of Gage's intent filters across from Boston and down from New Hampshire on 15 June. Acting quickly on this intelligence, the Massachusetts Committee of Safety orders General Artemas Ward, commander of the colonial militia surrounding Boston, to race the British to the Charlestown peninsula, capture Bunker Hill, and then seize the Dorchester hills.
The following day, Ward orders Colonel William Prescott, with the aid of one thousand colonial troops, to take and fortify Bunker Hill. Unknown to the British, Prescott and his troops arrive at the Charlestown peninsula that same night. Prescott and other off

Early Life and Military Beginnings

William Prescott was born on February 20, , in Groton, Massachusetts. In , he married Abigail Hale, and they had one child together.
William served in the provincial militia during the French and Indian War prior to the Revolutionary War. However, when the Americans began forming an army in , Prescott was there to fight for his country&#;s independence. He was appointed colonel of the Pepperell Company in Massachusetts.
The news that the British were coming on April 8, did not reach Pepperell until around 10 a.m. the next day, however, as soon as the word reached Prescott, he alerted all the companies near him and they rode down toward Concord. By the time they arrived, the day&#;s battle was over, but they were part of the army that laid siege to Boston afterwards.

To mark the th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill in , the Massachusetts Historical Society presents its first "web exhibition" – personal accounts and eyewitness descriptions of the battle, along with contemporary maps, drawings, engravings, broadsides, and artifacts, either preserved by the participants or found on the battlefield.
The exhibition is divided into six sections:

Timeline A timeline of events and documents described in the exhibition
Ten Accounts Ten contemporary manuscript and printed accounts of the battle with transcriptions of the texts

John Adams ()
John Adams was born in the North Precinct of Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, on October 30, , the eldest son of John and Susanna (Boylston) Adams. After graduating from Harvard College in , he studied and practiced law, and married Abigail Smith of Weymouth on October 25, Although already active in the Patriot cause, in Adams and Josiah Quincy, Jr., defended the British soldiers charged in the Boston Massacre Trials, successfully winning acquittals or reduced sentences for all the defendants.
