Thomas Henderson no longer answers to “Hollywood,” the nickname he created and then popularized during his five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
Now in his early 60s, Henderson considers himself lucky — and not because he’s a two-time lottery winner. He reversed the trail of alcohol and drug abuse that caused his life to spiral out of control. He established a new way of living, he says, on Nov. 8, , the day he became clean and sober. Thirty-three years later, he continues to talk frankly to high school students and athletes about the mistakes he’s made.
Henderson also is a community philanthropist, dedicated to creating opportunities for children living in East Austin. As the founder and chairman of East Side Youth Services and Street Outreach, he led the construction of a stadium — complete with an eight-lane track — for the recreational use of area youngsters.
Last week, Henderson spoke about the highs and lows experienced by an NFL All-Pro linebacker who played in three Super Bowls for the Cowboys, including a victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII:
