Biography of Thomas Sydney Cooper

Thomas Sydney Cooper was an English painter who was born on September 26, , in Canterbury, England. He was mostly known for his idyllic landscapes and depictions of animals, which were reminiscent of the works of Flemish masters.

Early Life and Education

Cooper discovered his passion for drawing and painting at a young age and was largely self-taught. He earned a living by selling paintings of his hometown, Canterbury, and its surroundings. By the age of seventeen, he secured a position as a decorator at a theater in Hastings.

Seeking further artistic education, Cooper moved to London and studied at the British Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts. After completing his studies, he returned to Canterbury and taught drawing for a period of time.

Artistic Influences in Belgium

In search of new opportunities, Cooper traveled to Belgium. Although he faced difficulties, he eventually arrived in Bruss

Thomas Sidney Cooper( - ). Thomas Sidney Cooper was an English landscape painter noted for his images of cattle and farm animals. Thomas Sidney Cooper was born in St Peter's Street in Canterbury, Kent, and as a small child he began to show strong artistic inclinations, but the circumstances of his family did not allow him to receive any systematic training. By the time he was twelve years old, he was working in the shop of a coach painter. Later he obtained a job as a scene painter; and he alternated between these two occupations for about eight years. He still felt a desire to become an artist, and all his spare moments were spent drawing and painting from nature. At the age of twenty he went to London, drew for a while in the British Museum, and was admitted as a student of the Royal Academy. He then returned to Canterbury, where he was able to earn a living as a drawing-master and by the sale of sketches and drawings. In he settled in Brussels and married; there he met Eug�ne Joseph Verboeckhoven. Because of the Belgian Revolution he returned to London, and by showing his first picture at the Royal Academy began an unprecedentedly prolonged career as an exhibitor. When

Thomas Sidney Cooper (image 1) was born in St Peter&#;s Street, Canterbury, on 26 September  His baptism later that year records simply &#;Thomas Cooper&#; &#; the Sidney was added in later years.  His family background was relatively poor.  Father William worked as a surveyor for the military, but left his wife Sarah in &#;influenced by some blind infatuation&#; never to return.  This left Sarah, described variously as dressmaker and upholsterer, to bring up five children as best she could.  Thomas attended the National School, and his flair for drawing was obvious from early years.  Archbishop Manners Sutton found him sketching in the cathedral precincts and, when asked by Thomas for help in sharpening his pencil, gave £5 for the drawing by way of encouragement.  Thomas&#; first job after basic schooling was as a coach painter.  He continued drawing local scenes, and in became a scenery painter at the theatre in Orange Street (image 2).  With some help from an uncle, Thomas won a place at the Royal Academy Schools in London in  He started this course but never completed it.
