LAURA TINGLE: Sydney-born Simone Young has lived in the ranks of the world's greatest conductors for decades now, but her story has a humble beginning.

SIMONE YOUNG, CONDUCTOR: I am quintessentially a girl from Manly. I come from a completely non-musical family. I had a schoolteacher already by that stage who was dragging me to concerts and sending me to do this and that.

LAURA TINGLE: Simone Young became intimately acquainted with the opera repertoire in the years she spent working as a repetiteur, a pianist who plays with singers as they learn their roles.

She was destined for bigger things and a career largely shaped by her love of composers of big music, like Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, and Richard Wagner.

SIMONE YOUNG: I had never heard any Wagner. I didn't have, as a pianist, I hadn't even thought about it. If I had been a brass player, I probably would have been confronted with it straightaway.

And this day the teacher put on, in those days an LP, and said we had to listen to this, and it was the prelude to Tristan, and I was just completely blown away.

Career

Simone Young is considered one of the most important conductors of our time. After completing her musical studies in her native Sydney, she began her career on the podium in Germany. This launched her international career, which has taken her to all important opera houses and symphony orchestras around the world.

As a guest conductor in the /23 season she leads productions at the Opéra de Paris (“Salome”), at the Vienna State Opera (“Elektra” and “Die Fledermaus”), at the Metropolitan Opera (“Der Rosenkavalier”), while concert invitations lead her to the stages of the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Orchestre national de France, the Orquesta nacional de España, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Philharmonia Zürich and the Orchestre national de Lyon.

Since July Simone Young is Chief Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Australian-born Simone Young is internationally recognised as one of the leading conductors of her generation. In she took up the post of General Manager and Music Director of the Hamburgische Staatsoper and Music Director of the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg, where she conducts repertoire ranging from Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Wagner and Strauss, to Hindemith, Britten and Henze. She is an acknowledged interpreter of the operas of Wagner and Strauss, and has conducted several complete cycles of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Vienna Staatsoper, the Staatsoper in Berlin and most recently to great acclaim in Hamburg as part of the ‘Wagner-Wahn’ Festival during which she conducted the 10 major Wagner operas. Her Hamburg recordings include the Ring cycle, Mathis der Maler (Hindemith), and symphonies of Bruckner, Brahms and Mahler.

Simone was Music Director of Opera Australia from to , Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra from - and from – was Principal Guest Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon. Simone Margaret Young was born in Sydney, Australia, on the 2nd of March She was educated at the Monte Sant&#; Angelo Mercy College, North Sydney. After finishing high school, Simone studied piano, conducting and composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

After her graduation, Simone began working at Opera Australia in as a repetiteur, under the tutelage of a number of highly regarded conductors. In she began her conducting career at the Sydney Opera House. Simone was not only the first woman but also the youngest person to be appointed, in , a resident conductor with Opera Australia. She was also named Young Australian of the Year in and received an Australia Council grant to study overseas.

Simone&#;s conducting career took off in leaps and bounds in Europe, first in , as Kapellmeister at the Cologne Opera, and later, in , as assistant to Daniel Barenboim at both the Berlin State Opera and the Bayreuth Festival. She made her debut conducting appearance in at the Hamburg State Opera. She took up two posts in , that of Chief Executive Officer and Chief Conductor of the Philharmoniker Hamburg.
