Shy Keenan was systematically raped by her stepfather Stanley Claridge throughout her childhood. When she was just ten she was almost killed by a group of abusers he had sold her to. In a Newsnight special investigation in , she secretly recorded Stanley Claridge admitting the abuse – an admission that led to him and his accomplices being arrested and brought to trial. Shy Keenan’s testimony ensured he and two other men were imprisoned.
Founder - with Sara Payne – of Phoenix Survivors, Shy Keenan now campaigns for justice for victims of childhood sexual abuse. Her book Broken is her story - of how she survived being abused and fought to bring those responsible to justice. The following extract is from chapter 30, Why Me?, which details the trial.

THE elder sister of Shy Keenan last night waived her own right to anonymity to join her in speaking out about their years of torment.
Angela Scott, of Stanney Grange, Ellesmere Port, said she had been too terrified to make a complaint because of the possible consequences for her own daughter, until Ms Keenan appeared on Newsnight.
Ms Scott, now 40, said: "It has been like living through a nightmare these last 15 months.
"For 21 years I was convinced that my daughter was Stanley's child, but we had DNA tests done once he was picked up by the police and it turned out she wasn't.
" There was another chance to speak out when I was last interviewed in but I had to protect my year-old.
" After the Newsnight programme went out, the police came to see if I would make a statement.
"I said I had a daughter to protect but my daughter said she was big enough to look out for herself and told me to let go."
