World Records for Australian wheelchair track athletes

In a stellar twenty-four hours for wheelchair track athletes from the NSW Institute of Sport, Rheed McCracken and Madi De Rozario hit world records in Switzerland at the IPC Grand Prix on the weekend.

Rheed McCracken set a new world record in the T34 m, the 21 year old beating his own previous record by to clock seconds.

&#;I really surprised myself actually with that one&#; said McCracken.

&#;I was hoping to go fast today but wasn’t really expecting that to be honest.

&#;After the yesterday I felt like there was an opportunity to go quick here in the and I woke up feeling really good.”

Just as impressive was Madi de Rozario in the T53/54 m with a time of that equalled the all-time best performance in the event.

&#;I didn’t have too many expectations, it was just a good experience and a good chance to race all the girls&#; de Rozario said.

The result equals Tatyana McFadden’s world record set in Arbon in and comes off the back of a terrific season for de Rozario. The NSWIS Scholarship Holder won two gold medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and took out the London Marathon last month.

Lovell conquers all to podium in Paris

Best friends and Paralympic Games debutants, sprinter Mali Lovell and javelin thrower Dayna Crees, both claimed bronze medals on the same day at Paris

Winning m medals in her T36 cerebral palsy class at major competitions is becoming a nice habit for Lovell, an NSW Institute of Sport scholarship athlete.

After silver at the World Championships in Paris and bronze at the worlds in Kobe, the year-old stepped out onto Stade de Paris and added another one.

“I had plenty of nerves – felt like butterflies or bats, not sure which. But I just wanted to save some energy to focus on running as fast as I could. And I felt I did that,” Lovell said.

She lowered her heat time by s to follow Tasman cousin, Danielle Aitchison (NZ) onto the podium, which would have delighted Lovell’s coaches Kate Edwards and three-time Olympian Melinda Gainsford-Taylor.

“Kate’s with me here but Mel is watching on the TV, on the couch at home. I think there’s been lots of yelling but she’s probably crying right now,” Lovell said.

“It’s mainly relief. I’ve worked hard and I’m proud of myself to get the race done and done well.”
