Nilima Sheikh

Nilima Sheikh was born in in New Delhi. She studied history at the Delhi University from and received a Masters in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda in She even taught painting at the Faculty between and Under the mentorship of K.G. Subramanyan and Gulammohammed Sheikh, she learned the significance of craft and folk art in modern Indian art forms and the power of narrative structure.
Rooted in Eastern painting traditions such as miniature painting, oral tradition found in vernacular folk songs, as well as her own life experience, she continues to create bodies of work that evoke mystical imaginary landscapes that address feminine experiences. She uses traditional tempera painting techniques to question the darker sides of Indian traditions such as arranged marriages, which often subvert women. The artist used text from vernacular folk songs along with the paintings, a motif that has continued in her work decades later. Her practice has embraced various kinds of tempera painting, from the hand-held miniature to the construct at an architectural scale, and from conventionally hung paintings to scrolls and screens for the theatre stage.

In her 50 years of work, Baroda-based artist Nilima Sheikh has created layered works that reject the framed canvas and extend the ambit of viewing — not just physically, as when she creates a 38 ft. scroll, for example, but also in how she expands and questions concepts of authorship, mediums and histories. In the middle of setting up her show in Kochi for the Biennale, the artist took time off for a telephone interview. Excerpts:
You were part of the Baroda Modernists, who were rejecting the Bombay Progressives while also trying to shed the vestiges of Shantiniketan. Is there a comparable art ‘grouping’ today that seeks to set the agenda so to speak?

Nilima Sheikh is rooted in Eastern painting traditions such as miniature painting and oral traditions found in vernacular folk songs. Through her own life experiences, Sheikh continues to create bodies of work that evoke mystical imaginary landscapes that address feminine experiences.
Inspired by reading Rabindranath Tagore, the artist became interested at an early age in the connection between stories and images, and age-old connection from murals to ancient manuscripts. Beyond appropriating traditional techniques in her work, Sheikh works with figure and narration in her practice, which has also beautifully translated into theatre sets such as the Vivadi theatre production of Umrao, as well as children’s books. Sheikh has inspired several generations over her five-decade career as a Baroda based painter.
During the last two decades, she has often been working on subjects that relate to the northern region of the Indian sub-continent, with particular emphasis on Kashmir.
