Maxwell james clerk biography

James Clerk Maxwell

James Clerk Maxwell was a renowned scientist and mathematician, known for discovering the theory of electromagnetic radiation.

James was born in Edinburgh in to a family of comfortable means. As a child, he was exceptionally academic, with a love of geometry, poetry and drawing. Educated at the prestigious Edinburgh Academy, he found friendship in the form of fellow classmates, Lewis Campbell and Peter Guthrie-Tait, who would also go on to become world-leading scientists.

After leaving school, James attended the University of Edinburgh. Between classes, he began to experiment with chemical, electronic and magnetic apparatus. This would lay the foundations for several scientific discoveries, including photoelasticity (a term used to describe how objects interact with light, first coined by physicist David Brewster).

In , James’ talents took him to Trinity College, University of Cambridge, where he studied mathematics. A devout Christian, James joined the Cambridge Apostles (an elite secret society at the time). After graduating, he returned to his native Scotland to take up a teaching post at Marischal College in Aberdeen. Here, he made his second major

Who Was James C. Maxwell?

James C. Maxwell studied at the University of Cambridge before holding a variety of professorship posts. Already known for his innovations in optics and gas velocity research, his groundbreaking theories around electromagnetism, articulated in the famed Maxwell's Equations, greatly influenced modern physics as we know it.

Academic Background

James Clerk Maxwell was born on June 13, , in Edinburgh, Scotland. Having a keen intellect from childhood, he had one of his geometry papers presented at the Royal Society of Edinburgh during his adolescence. By 16 he'd enrolled at the University of Edinburgh, pursuing a fervent interest in optics and color research. He studied there for three years and eventually attended Cambridge University's Trinity College, graduating in

After teaching at Trinity for a time, Maxwell moved on to Marischal College as part of the physics faculty. He wed Katherine Mary Dewar in

Saturn's Rings

While at Marischal, Maxwell pondered a major astronomical question, looking at the case of Saturn and coming up with the idea that the planet's rings are comprised of particles, a theory later confirmed via 20

James Maxwell was one of the world&#;s most influential physicists. In particular, he made great strides in helping to understand electromagnetism and produced a unified model of electromagnetism. His research in kinetics and electricity laid the foundations for modern Quantum mechanics and special relativity.

Short Bio James Maxwell

James Clerk Maxwell (13 June – 5 November )

James was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in From his early childhood, he displayed a natural inquisitiveness, always asking how things worked and moved as they did.

When he was eight, his mother died, and his father John took responsibility for his upbringing along with his sister-in-law Jane. In , he went to the Edinburgh Academy. He was a satisfactory student but took great interest in subjects outside the school syllabus, especially geometry, drawing and maths. At the age of 14, he wrote his first scientific paper (Oval Curves)

In , he moved to the University of Edinburgh where he studied classes on logic, mathematics, and natural philosophy. However, like at school, he was more interested in pursuing his own stu

Shortly afterwards his family moved to their home at Glenlair in Kirkcudbrightshire about 20 km from Dumfries. There he enjoyed a country upbringing and his natural curiosity displayed itself at an early age. In a letter written on 25 April when 'The Boy' was not yet three years old he is described as follows, see [3]:-
He is a very happy man, and has improved much since the weather got moderate; he has great work with doors, locks, keys etc., and 'Show me how it doos' is never out of his mouth. He also investigates the hidden course of streams and bell-wires, the way the water gets from the pond through the wall and a pend or small bridge and down a drain
When James was eight years old his mother died. His parents plan that they would educate him at home until he was 13 years old, and that he would then be able to go the Edinburgh University, fell through. A 16 year old boy was hired to act as tutor but the arrangement was not a successful one and it was decided that James should attend the Edinburgh A
