Yesterday I wrote an article about the amazing role models our children have in the world of swimming for I was pointing out three greats as examples: Michael Phelps, Kaitlin Sandeno and Ryan Lochte. Yes, Ryan Lochte.
For non swimming fans, Lochte did something amazing this past week. His suspension ended a few days ago and he won a gold medal at the US Nationals in Stanford on Sunday. He turned 35 years old the day before. He was racing kids who were 17 and 19 years old! And he won decidedly. Talk about a role model. He didn&#;t give up despite really screwing up and blowing it at Rio and beyond. Instead he got his life back on track and trained. He got married, has two beautiful babies and entered rehab. He showed a sense of humility and gratitude after winning the gold medal that quite frankly was missing in his youth. Here&#;s the video of him winning the IM.
As far as Michael Phelps, I was honored to hear him speak a few years ago. He told a story of his bouts with depression and substance abuse and said at one time he no longer wanted to live. He&#;s refocused his life and is making a difference in the charities he volunteer
Kaitlin Sandeno was a distance swimmer who swam freestyle, butterfly, and individual medley. Competing at the and Olympic Games, she won four medals, with a gold in the 4x freestyle relay, silver in the individual medley, and bronzes in the metre freestyle and the metre freestyle.
Sandeno also won four medals at the World Aquatics Championships, with gold in the 4x free relay, and bronze medals in the freestyle and butterfly, and the IM. At the World Short-Course Championships, she won four gold medals in in the freestyle, butterfly, IM, and 4x free relay. She returned to the Short-Course Worlds in and added a silver in the IM and a bronze in the 4x free relay. Sandeno was the gold medalist in the and metre freestyles at the Pan American Games. She retired in after failing to make the US Olympic Team for Beijing.
Sandeno had several ventures after her competitive career ended. She did some sports broadcasting and some coaching at local high schools in Santa Ana, California. In she joined the swim fin company Laguna Fin as a partner and face of the company. In she became general manager of DC Trident, a team in the International Swimming League.

Swimming offers our kids amazing role models. Whether it’s older kids on their team, coaches, or Olympic heroes, the sport is filled with extraordinary people. This past week we saw Ryan Lochte make an amazing comeback and win gold at U.S. Nationals. With Lochte’s story, we can tell our kids that he’s human and messed up, wasn’t a great role model in Rio, but look how he’s learned, grown and improved as a person. And yes, he can still swim fast! Throughout the ups and downs of Lochte’s career, there’s one thing that is clear—he never gives up. Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history, and has overcome his demons to become an incredible role model for our children. Olympic medalist Kaitlin Sandeno overcame asthma, injuries, is a TV personality and serves as a spokesperson for the Jessie Rees Foundation, bringing joy to children fighting cancer.
Swimming is filled with talented, hard working people our children can learn from. It’s a proud moment when we watch our children become role models for the younger kids on their team, too.
