Who Was Mahatma Gandhi?

Mahatma Gandhi was the leader of India’s non-violent independence movement against British rule and in South Africa who advocated for the civil rights of Indians. Born in Porbandar, India, Gandhi studied law and organized boycotts against British institutions in peaceful forms of civil disobedience. He was killed by a fanatic in

Early Life and Education

Indian nationalist leader Gandhi (born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) was born on October 2, , in Porbandar, Kathiawar, India, which was then part of the British Empire.

Gandhi’s father, Karamchand Gandhi, served as a chief minister in Porbandar and other states in western India. His mother, Putlibai, was a deeply religious woman who fasted regularly.

Young Gandhi was a shy, unremarkable student who was so timid that he slept with the lights on even as a teenager. In the ensuing years, the teenager rebelled by smoking, eating meat and stealing change from household servants.

Although Gandhi was interested in becoming a doctor, his father hoped he would also become a government mini

Where to begin with Hirokazu Koreeda

Why this might not seem so easy

Despite a critically acclaimed, award-laden career stretching over 20 years, Japan’s Hirokazu Koreeda probably remains a household name only to more hardcore cinephiles. And though most of his work regularly graces major international film festivals (his debut feature Maborosi won a prize at Venice and he’s been in competition five times at Cannes, winning ’s Jury prize for Like Father, like Son) and garners international distribution, he’s never had the breakout foreign-language success of an Amelie () or Pan’s Labyrinth (), nor accrued the vocal cult following of auteurs like Wong Kar-wai or Pedro Almodóvar.

If, on one hand, it’s a shame that such an accomplished filmmaker hasn’t found greater widespread recognition, on the other it almost goes against the very essence of Koreeda’s habitual work. His films are intimate domestic dramas, languid in pace and muted in overt sentiment, but rich in quotidian de

Hirokazu Kore-eda

Distance () is a half-baked character study and an ill-defined analysis of social diseases, that, stylistically, borrows heavily from Blair Witch Project. The director does not seem interested in all in creating and following a plot (which is basically wasted here). His attention is all focused on the process of "believing": how do some ordinary people come to believe in something that changes their lives, and how do other people, who did not experience that "change", come to understand what had happened. It is, ultimately, another meditation on memory and meaning, through the solitary calvary as well as the collective self-flagellation of four individuals.

Dare Mo Shiranai/ Nobody Knows () is another austere documentary-style semi-improvisational film that involves four people who live in their own closed fantasy universe. This time the universe is a happy and innocent one, one in which they feel safe. And this time the four protagonists are children who don't know the real world, and suddenly they have to explore it and learn how to cope with it. The film is neatly divided in three parts. At first it merely describes the artificial and precari

In India, he is known as &#;Father of the Nation&#;.

&#;When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it–always.&#;
