Gary James Paulsen (May 17, – October 13, ) was an American writer of children's and young adult fiction, best known for coming-of-age stories about the wilderness. He was the author of more than books and wrote more than magazine articles and short stories, and several plays, all primarily for teenagers. He won the Margaret Edwards Award from the American Library Association in for his lifetime contribution in writing for teens.

Gary Paulsen, born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in , is a famous writer of young adult literature. He has written over books, as well as more than magazine articles and short stores intended for teenagers. His most famous work is Hatchet,the first in a saga all focused around the main character, Brian.
Paulsen spent most of his childhood in Minnesota; however, he also lived in the Philippines for two years (beginning when he was seven) while his father was stationed there in the military. This was Paulsen's first time meeting his father, who had not lived with them because of his military duties. Paulsen has written a few autobiographical works, including Eastern Sunand Winter Moon: An Autobiographical Odysseywhich detail some of his struggles growing up, which primarily involved coping with the absence of his father, as well as his mother's alcoholism and various sexual encounters with other men. At age 14, Paulsen ran away and joined a carnival.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 17, , Gary Paulsen was raised by his grandmother in northern Minnesota while his mother worked in a Chicago munitions plant and his father, a career military officer, was abroad during World War II. In , when he was seven, Paulsen moved with his mother to the Philippines and saw his father for the first time. The family returned to the United States in Moving frequently because of his father's military assignments, Paulsen was shy and unathletic and had both social and academic problems in school.
Paulsen credits several events with turning his life around. As a teen-ager he met a public librarian who gave him a library card and turned him into a voracious reader who devoured books.
