Erle Stanley Gardner () became one of the most successful mystery writers of all time. Most of his reputation stems from Perry Mason and other memorable characters that he created. Gardner's best novels offer abundant evidence of his natural storytelling talent.
Gardner was born in Malden, Massachusetts on July 17, He spent much of his childhood traveling with his mining-engineer father through the remote regions of California, Oregon, and the Klondike. In his teens he not only boxed for money, but also promoted a number of unlicensed matches. Gardner attended high school in California and graduated from Palo Alto High School He enrolled at Valparaiso University in Indiana that same year but was soon expelled for striking a professor.
In the practice of law Gardner found the form of combat he seemed born to master. He was admitted to the California bar in and opened an office in Oxnard

Erle Stanley Gardner (July 17, – March 11, )[1][2] was an American lawyer and author of detective stories. Best known for the Perry Mason series, he also published under the pseudonyms A.A. Fair, Kyle Corning, Charles M. Green, Carleton Kendrake, Charles J. Kenny, Les Tillray and Robert Parr.
Erle was born in Malden, Massachusetts, the second child of Charles Walter Gardner and Grace Adelma Waugh. The eldest child, Walter, was two years older. A third child, Kenneth, was born in His father, a civil engineer, moved the family west to find work in his field, first to Portland, Oregon[3], and then to Oroville, California.
Erle's mother was of Mayflower stock, both parents were descendants of Colonial New Englanders. His father was an engineer who descended from a long line of sea captains. His parents moved to California in for business reasons.
Erle's parents had one son in Stanford and could not afford to support another college student, so Erle read for the law in a legal off

Erle Stanley Gardner was an American writer and a classic author of detective fiction. He published over novels under various pseudonyms such as A.A. Fair, Kendrake, and Kenny. In , Gardner opened a law firm in Merced, California. After a few years, he transitioned to a sales agency and in , he established the law firm of Sheridan, Orr, Drapo, and Gardner in Ventura, California.
Gardner gained popularity through his captivating performances in court proceedings until , when he decided to dedicate himself entirely to literature. In , Gardner founded and was a member of the "Court of Last Resort," an organization that aimed to review death penalty cases. He was awarded the Edgar Allan Poe Award by the American Association of Mystery Writers in for his documentary book about this organization, in the category of Grand Master.
