Edita Tahiri is a leader of the independence of Kosovo. She is a key founder and leader of the movement for independence of Kosovo. She was for ten years the Minister of Foreign Affairs of of Kosovo in hard times of liberation of her country (), gaining successfully international support and recognition for Kosovo’s independence.

She was the Deputy Prime minister of Kosovo and also Minister of Dialogue, Minister of Public Administration and Member of Parliament in five terms.

Edita Tahiriis recognized as the only women peace negotiator in the Balkans participating in the formal peace processes such as the Rambouillet Peace Conference in , which ended 10 years of war in Kosovo and opened the door to its freedom and independence in Thanks to US and NATO intervention.

Biography

Edita Tahiri was born July 29, in the city of Prizren in the south of what is now Kosovo. Living through the violence and upheavals that have transformed her homeland again and again in the 20th and 21st centuries, Edita has actively participated in bringing justice and stability to Kosovo. In the s, Edita played a vital role in the movement for Kosovo’s independence. She was a founding member of the Democratic League of Kosovo and a leader of its Women’s Forum. In , she made an “extraordinary contribution” to the work of the Kosovar delegation to the Rambouillet Conference that led to the Rambouillet Agreement, an international framework for “peace and self-government” in Kosovo.1 She has held a number of ministerial positions before and since independence. These include minister of foreign affairs, minister of public administration, and her current role as deputy prime minister. Her commitment to democratic reform in Kosovo led her to form the Kosovo Democratic Alternative party (ADK) in ADK, which continues under Edita’s direction, enjoyed marked success in parliamentary elections. Very few women in the world can start their life’s journey as one of an oppressed people in their country, grow to become the voice of their new-born nation to the world, help it earn its freedom, and then not only live to tell the tale, but also make a successful political career. Edita Tahiri from Kosovo is one such rare example, and she has many stories to tell.

These tales range from being a founder of a movement for independence from Serbian occupation, the Democratic League of Kosovo, to her relentless political and diplomatic work for the liberation and international recognition of Europe’s youngest country. But they all simmer down to one, which she describes as her most significant life achievement: “I am proud that we brought Kosovo freedom and independence and ensured that Albanians would never again suffer from genocide.”

Aurela Kadriu: Can you introduce yourself and tell us some of your early childhood memories, so your family background and whatever you remember from your childhood?

Edita Tahiri: I am Edita Tahiri. I come from Prizren. Known for my work as a politician, diplomat, negotiator, as well as one of the main leaders of the Movement for Independence. At that time, the Democratic League of Kosovo1 as a Peaceful Movement for Independence, and my entire life journey was a commitment to the national cause, for the independence and freedom of Kosovo. But there were periods of time when I also devoted myself to academic life doing my education at Harvard, then my doctorate at Johns Hopkins and the University of Prishtina.

I got a master’s at the University of Essex as well, and at the University of Prishtina I studied at the Faculty of Electronics. And the rest, since Harvard and the rest, were connected to my master’s and doctoral studies in political science. I have lived in Prishtina since I was elected chairwoman of the Democratic League of Kosovo in Before that I lived in Prizren, except for when I studied in Pristina and in Britain, Essex.
