Haleh Afshar, Baroness Afshar
Haleh Afshar was born on 21st May in Iran. She is a British professor and a life peer in the House of Lords.
Political career[edit]
Haleh Afshar is a professor in politics and women's studies at the University of York, England and a visiting professor of Islamic law at the Faculté Internationale de Droit Comparé at Robert Schuman University in Strasbourg, France. Afshar serves on several bodies such as the British Council and the United Nations Association, of which she is Honorary President of International Services. She was appointed to the board of the Women's National Commission in September She has also served as the Chair for the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (BRISMES). Afshar is a founding member of the Muslims Women's Network and has worked for the Home Office's working groups, on "engaging with women" and "preventing extremism together". She was appointed to the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours list of June for services to equal opportunities. Kim Edwards (born May 4, ) is an American author and educator. She was born in Killeen, Texas, grew up in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, and graduated from Colgate University and The University of Iowa, where she earned an MFA in fiction and an MA in linguistics. Haleh Afshar, Baroness AfsharOBE, (* in Teheran, Iran) ist eine Professorin für Politik und Frauenstudien an der University of York, wo sie in den er Jahren auch studierte und Gastprofessorin für Islamisches Recht an der Faculté Internationale de Droit Comparé der Université de Strasbourg. Afshar ist das erste weibliche Mitglied iranischer Herkunft im britischen Oberhaus. Sie sitzt dort als Crossbencher.
Leben
Afshar wuchs im Iran auf, wo sie auch eine Zeit lang als Journalistin arbeitete. Sie ist in mehreren Gremien tätig, unter anderen im British Council und in der United Nations Association. Haleh Afshar ist Gründerin und Vorsitzende eines moslemischen Frauennetzwerks und berät die britische Regierung in politischen Fragen hinsichtlich moslemischer Frauen und dem islamischen Recht.
