The wonderful Russian violinist Nina Beilina has died in New York at the age of
A student of David Oistrakh at the Moscow Conservatoire, she won gold medal at the Enescu contest and came third in the Tchaikovsky Competition (winner: Boris Gutnikov), going on to a considerable career in Russia and abroad.
In , after her husband&#;s death, she settled with her son Emil Chudnovsky in New York, becoming a professor at Mannes School of Music. Emil is now a successful concert violinist.
There will be a memorial service at 12 noon on Sunday, December 2, at Riverside Memorial Chapel ( W 76th St., New York, NY).

The Russian-born violinist Nina Beilina died on 25 November at the age of Born in , Beilina studied with Abram Yampolsky and Julius Eidlin before Oistrakh took her on as a postgraduate at the Moscow Conservatoire. She entered only three competitions in her career, and won prizes in all three: She was joint third at the Tchaikovsky Competition, won first at the Enescu in Bucharest and the Grand Prix at the Long-Thibaud in Paris. As well as touring the Soviet Union, she was well received in Finland and South America. After the death of her husband, the conductor Israel Chudnovsky, Beilina emigrated to the United States where she taught at the Mannes School of Music in New York, also giving masterclasses in Italy, Germany and Taiwan. Her recital appearances included Carnegie Hall and the Alice Tully Hall, as well as numerous engagements throughout the US and internationally. Her performances in Italy earned her the Viotti d’Oro Award in Her son is the violinst and teacher Emil Chudnovsky. During her early career, Beilina was considered to be one of the foremost female violinists in the Soviet Union, having won the gold medal in the Enescu Competition; the Grand Prix at the Long-Thibaud Competition in Paris; and a Bronze Medal at the Tchaikovsky Competition. Beilina, whose mother was a piano teacher in Russia, started violin at the age of 5 and went on to study with Abraham Yampolsky, Julius Eidlin and most famously, with David Oistrakh. Ten years ago, Beilina shared her thoughts about David Oistrakh on : "As a teacher, Oistrakh was as demanding of his students as he was of himself," she said. "He was incredibly picky regarding any and all conceivable errors. As a violinist, he was what I call a 'jeweler.' This meant that he put every piece under a virtual microscope regarding every shift, every bowing. Everything had to be completely secure, consistent and unshakable." Bachanalia Chamber Orchestra is an ensemble of star professional musicians founded in by the famed Russian violin virtuoso emigre Nina Beilina.
