Yan Lianke est né en dans le village de Tianhu, dans le district de Song, au Henan (河南省嵩县田湖镇), près de Luoyang (洛阳. Yan Lianke er en kinesisk forfatter, som er kendt for sine romaner og noveller, der ofte er satiriske og kritiske over for det kinesiske samfund. En del af hans værker er på grund af det kritiske indhold blevet forbudt i Kina.
I begyndelsen af forfatterskabet skrev Yan i en realistisk stil. Den ændrede sig markant i slutningen af 'erne, hvor hans værker i højere grad blev præget af vild fantasi og kreative allegorier. Mange af dem foregår i det naturlige miljø omkring Balou-bjerget, som er blevet en vigtig ramme i hans litterære verden.
Hans stil beskrives som eksperimentel og surrealistisk, men også realistisk. Han kalder det selv "mytorealisme", som beskrives som en stilart, der tager udgangspunkt i den virkelige verden. Yan beskriver den i et fabulerende og fantastisk sprog og skaber på den måde en ny virkelighed.
