January 6,
Engaging, high-stakes and action filled play. Five characters, story takes place within a few days.
Premise is simple: Jackie discovers a collection of highly valuable stamps in her dead mother's house and goes on a mission to sell them. Many, many obstacles are in the way.
Emotional heartbeat is about family, sharing, grace (or lack thereof), grief, finding value in the present moment.

ACT ONE
scene one:
- Jackie (main character) almost monologuing at Philip, her internal thoughts about what she wants coming out.
- classic game of interrogation, fluster, rebuttal, interrogation
- “they” off stage that doesn’t really need explaining
- big news hinted at in opening scene that sets the action forward (expensive stamp that Jackie doesn’t know about)

scene two:
- picks up in new location, one character from previous scene (dennis) and a new one (sterling), discussing what happened in scene 1, and what it means for them
- building the suspense and action
- dialogue is doing a lot of ‘not saying’
- small insignificant detail brought back, Dennis noticed the comic book thing

scene three:
- Jackie and Mary packing. to begin with, having two different convos.

A review of Ari Stidham&#;s and Synthetic Unlimited&#;s “Mauritius,” written by Theresa Rebeck and directed by Ari Stidham.

I love outdoor theatre. It’s even more appealing lately because of covid of course, but Ari Stidham’s “Mauritius” isn’t just a play they decided to do outside. It’s far, far more thoughtfully conceived than that.

The play is about a young girl, Jackie, who inherits her grandfather&#;s stamp collection.  After her mothers death and while she is going through the house, she finds it again, remembering that her mother always told her it was valuable and wanted her to have it.  Jackie’s mother&#;s estate is in total disarray, she was sick for a long time and bills are owed, and there is no will to be found. Yet, it&#;s the arrival of Mary, Jackie&#;s half sister, that really puts the pressure on. Mary was her grandfather&#;s favourite and inherited his entire estate.  She’s rich because of it and Jackie and her mother got nothing.

It’s an especially grim reunion between the sisters since Mary seems to consider the stamp collection hers and clearly has only shown up to take possession of it. Clearly, theres’s plenty of bad blood between them.  Jackie’

Synopsis

When her mother dies after an expensive illness and a lifetime of bad choices, tentative but tenacious young Jackie is left with a mound of debt. One glimmer of hope: a stamp collection, potentially valuable, is among her assets. Philip, the brusque and arrogant stamp dealer to whom she takes the collection, won’t even take a look without his $ fee. Charming Dennis, a former stamp collector and small-time grifter down on his luck, who just happens to be hanging out in Philip’s shop, is only too willing to look at Jackie’s collection. Discovering two Mauritius “Post Office” stamps, the “crown jewel of philately”, in the old album, he is overjoyed. Dennis assumes that unassuming Jackie will be easy to scam, and contacts Sterling, an incredibly rich and remorselessly violent “international businessman” who is an obsessive stamp fancier, promising him an easy purchase. Meanwhile Jackie, whose secret well of rage and resourcefulness makes her no-one’s “lamb”, runs into obstacles of her own: her educated, refined, estranged, much older half-sister, Mary, claims the stamp collection as her own -- an inheritance from her paternal grandfather -- and refuses to sell,
