THE THEATRE OF FEMI OSOFISAN – A CRITICAL SUMMATION (Revised January ) (This is an excerpt from my forthcoming book, The Theatre of Femi Osofisan. Marxism. Mythologies. Mimesis., due to be published by Universal Books UK on 28 February ) Femi Osofisan’s prominence as a Nigerian playwright, poet, and literary critic with an international acclaim is wellestablished. The blurb of Ajayi Crowther () cites over fifty plays to Osofisan’s credit and frequent performances of his plays in several parts of the world. This study is concerned with the dramaturgy of Osofisan based on The Chattering and the Song (), Once Upon Four Robbers (), Morountodun (), No More the Wasted Breed (), Red is the Freedom Road (), Another Raft (), and Yungba Yungba and the Dance Contest (). Additionally, Wole Soyinka’s The Strong Breed () and J.P. Clark-Bekederemo’s The Raft () are studied alongside Osofisan’s responses to both plays. By “dramaturgy”, my focus is on the phalanx of theoretical impulses in Osofisan’s theatre, and their concretion in specific dramatic practices in the composition of Osofisan’s plays. Dr Sola Adeyemi holds a BA, MA and PhD in Theatre Arts, Drama and English from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, University of Natal, South Africa and the University of Leeds respectively. He has taught Contemporary British Theatre, African Theatre, Performance Studies and Film Studies and Contextual Shakespeare at Loughborough and Regents Universities, and at the universities of Natal and Greenwich. At Goldsmiths, he teaches on African Theatre History, Postcolonial Theatre, and Culture and Performance.
