« Une aventure incroyable » : La charismatique soprano Pretty Yende aborde le répertoire baroque
La soprano sud-africaine, sollicitée aux quatre coins du monde, est au Théâtre des Champs-Élysées jusqu’au 15 février à l’affiche de Semele l’opéra de Haendel. C’est la première fois dans sa carrière que Pretty Yende aborde le répertoire baroque.
Dans cette production mise en scène par Oliver Mears, directeur du Royal Opéra de Londres, avec Emmanuelle Haïm à la direction de l’un des ensembles baroques les plus renommés, Le Concert d’Astrée, Pretty Yende, chantera le rôle principal. Connue pour son timbre lumineux qu’elle a d’abord expérimenté dans le bel canto, la chanteuse sud-africaine vit, avec ce rôle nouveau, une « aventure incroyable », a-t-elle confié.
Il lui tardait de connaître, « avec le public à Paris ce quelque chose de différent », ajoute celle qui a par ailleurs chanté au couronnement du roi Charles III en Le chant baroque se caractérise par une ornementation abondante, avec des trilles, des mordants et des mélismes (une seule syllabe de texte chantée sur plusieurs notes successives). Born in Piet Retief, South Africa, she studied at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town, and the Academy of La Scala, Milan. She won First Prize in Operalia (). She was inspired to study opera aged 16, when she saw a British Airways TV advert that featured The Flower Duet from Leo Délibes' opera, Lakmé.
In , Pretty sang the role of Musetta in Puccini's La bohème at La Scala in Milan. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in New York in , in the role of Adèle in Rossini's Le comte Ory.
In , Yende played Susanna in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro at the Los Angeles Opera, and in she starred in Rossini's The Barber of Seville as Rosina.

Hailing from a small town in South Africa, star soprano Pretty Yende has performed on some of the world’s most iconic concert stages.
Perhaps her most historic performance invitation to date will take place on 6 May, when she performs in Westminster Abbey as part of the coronation ceremony for King Charles III, at the invitation of the King himself.
