Tidal: Living a life of its own.
In Poppy and Phil published "The Tidal Model: A Guide for Mental Health Professionals' and in Dr Nancy Brookes from Canada published a chapter on the Tidal Model in Nursing Theorists and Their Work (See Publications). In a three-day International Tidal Model Conference was held in New Zealand and interest in Tidal began to spread to Europe and both North and South America. The Tidal Model had begun to acquire a life of its own.
It is particularly pleasing to see that the Tidal Model has found some great advocates among people for whom English is a second language. This is a clear demonstration of the universal nature of the philosophy of the Tidal Model.
This has been emphasised in recent years by the number of translations of the Tidal Model and by the practice evaluations in settings far removed from where it first began in England in the s.
To date translations of the Tidal Model have been made by our colleagues in Germany and Swtizerland, Denmark, Sweden, Turkey, Spain and Brazil. (See Publications). This is a gre
THE MAN BEHIND IT ALL
Phil Barker is the man behind the Tidal Model Theory. His nursing career began over thirty years ago. To sustain himself, he started out as a nursing assistant and eventually became one of the UK's first nurse psychotherapists, one of UK's nurse clinicians to gain a PhD and the first professor of psychiatric nursing practice, at Newcastle University. Given an honorary doctorate at the Oxford Brookes University in , he has long been both a distinctive and controversial figure in nursing. Collaboratively, he authored 14 books - one of which was about the Tidal Model, which was developed from a 5-year study of the need for psychiatric nursing undertaken at the University of Newcastle, UK. Such model was eventually adopted by mental health nurses in numerous countries. In , he decided to give up his post at Newcastle to concentrate on writing, lecturing, and not to mention, returning to his first love, painting.
Barker is well-known, aside from his intelligence of course, for his long beard, red clogs and great personality. To get to know the man better, here is an excerpt from one of his interviews dated , with Chris Hart:

Phil Barker
Early Life
Phil Barker and his wife and colleague, Poppy, grew up in small towns outside of Scotland in the s. They both came from modest backgrounds. He describes his parents as hard working, morally conscious people who had very little in material goods but felt that work, love and laughter were important. He feels that his childhood was the golden age that influenced the rest of his life. Poppy's father, John Buchanan, was a coal miner who taught her to love nature and instilled in her the values of myth and legend that gave her strength of character. His death from the hazards of coal dust taught her that life is a mixture of light and darkness. Her career in social work is the perfect complement to her husband's work in the mental health field.
