We congratulate opera director John Copley CBE, who has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours list.
John has worked at most of the world’s major opera houses, and in celebrated his 50th anniversary as a director at the Royal Opera House, where his hugely popular production of Puccini’s La bohème has been in repertory for nearly 40 years.
He has directed several RCM International Opera School productions, notably a production of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream which featured budding stars such as Andrew Kennedy and Jonathan Lemalu, transferred to Edinburgh, and was described in The Times as “quite the most discerning staging of Britten’s opera in many years.”
John Copley returns to the RCM on Friday 24 January to direct more Britten as part of the RCM International Opera School’s Opera Scenes. This showcase performance includes extracts from Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Mozart’s Idomeneo, Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Bizet’s Carmen, and feat
