Lee Strasberg
Born Israel Strasberg on November 17, , in Budzanów, Poland, Austria-Hungary (now Budanov, Ukraine), Lee Strasberg went on to become one of the top acting teachers of the 20th century. Al Pacino, Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman, Maureen Stapleton and Marlon Brando were among his many students at the Actors Studio in New York City. Strasberg moved to New York with his family in He first became involved in the theater at the Chrystie Street Settlement House, acting in productions staged there.
Strasberg had a life-changing experience in , when he attended a performance directed by Constantin Stanislavski. The production was part of the Moscow Art Theatre's American tour, and Stanislavski's work influenced Strasberg's entire career path. Around this time, Strasberg began working with the Theatre Guild. He started out as an assistant stage manager and then moved into acting.

Birth and Early Life
Lee Strasberg, born Israel Strassberg on November 17, , hailed from a Jewish family in Budaniv, Austro-Hungarian Empire (present-day Ukraine). Emigrating to New York City in , he sought solace in reading and the company of his elder brother Zalmon. Zalmon's untimely demise in deeply affected Lee, prompting him to leave school despite his academic excellence.

Lee Strasberg was born Israel Strasberg in Galicia, then part of Austria-Hungary, on November 17, He was brought to Manhattan's Lower East Side at age seven. Strasberg's father was a garment worker and was active in a trade union which supported community theater. It was in this Yiddish Theatre that Strasberg was first exposed to the naturalistic style of acting. While he was still a young boy he joined the amateur Progressive Dramatic Club, whose leaders were quite familiar with the theories of Constantine Stanislavsky, the great acting coach and director of the Moscow Art Theatre.
After leaving Townsend Harris High School in to work as a clerk in a wig factory, he studied acting at the American Laboratory Theatre under Richard Boleslavsky and Maria Ouspenskaya, both former students of Stanislavsky. He also gained his first experience as a director as a member of an amateur theatrical group that produced plays in the Christie Street Settlement House, a social center on the Lower East Side.
