I chose this artwork because this particular piece alluding to a battlefield on land and in the air, with planes ablaze, raised awareness about the harsh social realities in the Philippines immediately after the Second World War (The Philippines was embroiled in the bitter war between the Allies and the Axis, as it was under American rule when the Japanese army marched on our islands to conquer the resource-rich and strategically-located paradise).

In the fifties, the world first glimpsed how life as we knew it might end. The nuclear weapons testing that was then going on unabated produced monstrously-shaped plants, horribly deformed animals and sickened humans irradiated near testing sites in Nevada and the Pacific. At the time, people feared that if the pace of superpower rivalry between America and the Soviet Union continued, the world would indeed end in a nuclear apocalypse, leaving only mutated life-forms to survive and feast on humanity. Sci-fi fantasy films about radiation-strengthened mutant monsters wreaking havoc on civilization became avidly patronized by the public, such as the Japanese cult classic Gojira/Godzilla, and the now less-remembered Hollywood B-movie, The Beginning of the End. Filipino artist Hernando Ruiz Ocampo () managed to channel this fear of tomorrow into a compellingly modern motif that would result not in human catastrophe, but in aesthetic success.

National Artist for Visual Arts, writer, and journalist Hernando R. Ocampo - better known to the Philippine artworld as HR - was born in Santa Cruz, Manila to parents Emilio Ocampo and Delfina Ruiz. He took up a pre-law course at the Letran College and commerce at the Far Eastern University. Moreover, he joined Narciso Reyes in establishing the Veronicans, a pre-war group of writers. Despite being offered scholarships to study abroad, he declined, preferring to stay with his family and home. As a self-taught artist, he learned drawing and painting from magazines such as Life and Time which showed color reproductions of paintings done by the masters.
According to art writer Emmanuel Torres, Ocampo&#;s usual painting process is to outline or put a number on each section or shape in the canvas, then he would fill each shape with paint according to a color code he wrote on his note. This shows how meticulous and diligent he was in his art making process.

Ocampo originally studied law, economics, and creative writing, and began as an English writer. During the Japanese Occupation, Ocampo turned to writing in Tagalog and wrote plays for the stage, becoming the chief scriptwriter and assistant director of the Associated Artists. The Japanese also appointed him censor for the stage and for the Taliba newspaper, at the same time that he had an intelligence assignment as second lieutenant in Straughn’s Guerrillas. He also became editor of the Manila Sunday Chronicle Magazine and later produced TV productions.
Ocampo was particularly renowned for works that addressed the harsh reality of his country after World War II. A large part of his oeuvre, however, also illustrates beautiful Filipino landscapes. His paintings then became increasingly abstract.
