Edgar Allan Poe was born Edgar Poe on January 19, , in Boston, Massachusetts. He never truly knew his biological parents: his mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe, was a British actress, while his father, David Poe Jr., was an actor originally from Baltimore. His father abandoned the family when Edgar was very young, and his mother succumbed to tuberculosis when he was only two years old.

Overly pedantic at times (do we reallyneed to know the precise location of the building where Eliza Poe died?) and slightly dated, but still the best complete biography. Quinn is, on the whole, admirably clear-headed and much more judicious than most Poe specialists. If you must read only one Poe book, here's the place to go.
*Edward Wagenknecht, "Edgar Allan Poe, the Man Behind the Legend." Not an actual biography--more like a biography of Poe's biographies--but it's a fine overview of what has been written about the man. More intelligent and insightful than many other Poe books, this makes a good introductory volume to Poe's strange life. “He was a social person. He wasn’t some disembodied brain floating through the cosmos. He had friends,” said Richard A. Kopley, author of “Edgar Allan Poe: A Life,” recently published by the University of Virginia Press. “He had friends who loved him, he had some enemies, and he lived in a world in which he was a very cherished person, and he knew it. And he brought his wife, Virginia, and his mother-in-law into that world.”
Kopley, a professor emeritus of English at Pennsylvania State University, DuBois, is the author and editor of numerous papers and books on American literature and the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement and Service Award from the Poe Studies Association.
