Gupta Dynasty coins: Kings of the Gupta Dynasty & their coins

Chandragupta I

Even though Chandragupta's reign has few numismatic sources, there is still a significant discovery.

  • The gold Chandragupta-Kumaradevi (king-queen type) coins of Chandragupta I provide information on their marriage.
  • Kumaradevi was the princess of the Lichchhavis kingdom, and Chandragupta I was the Gupta king. The face of these coins features Chandragupta with his queen Kumaradevi, and the reverse features a sitting goddess and the phrase Lichchhavayah (i.e. the Lichchhavis).

Samudragupta

He is said to have issued gold dinar coins during his reign, which came in seven different varieties (including the "Lichhaviya" kind).

  • Coins of the standard design were often used. The king is shown wearing a headdress made of this kind of money and carrying a Garuda Dhwaja in his left hand. On the coin's back, the goddess Laxmi is shown.
  • The uncommon Archer kinds, which feature Samudra Gupta wielding a bow and were originally introduced in Indian Numismatics, are another significant coin type.
  • Similar to this, a few coins bearing the legend "Kritantparashuh" and depicting weapons such as bat
