Putlibai begins with a title card touting the fact that it was filmed on location in the ravines of Chambal. The area is notorious for being a hiding place for bandits, including, at one time, that most celebrated of India&#;s lady bandits, Phoolan Devi, aka The Bandit Queen. Putlibaiitself could be said to tell the story of a bandit queen, though it notably does so almost ten years before the fabled exploits of Phoolan Devi. Nonetheless, the film comes across like nothing so much as an early 70s precursor to the countless &#;Daku&#; movies churned out by India&#;s Z movie industry in recent years, which themselves are in no small part indebted to Phoolan Devi for their existence, and in particular to Shekhar Kapur&#;s controversial film account of her exploits, &#;s Bandit Queen.

One of the most well-known and revered bandit queens in India (s); 1st came to public attention as a willowy dancer in mother's traditional Nauchghar (brothel of dancing girls) in town of Agra; kidnapped by the leader of a dacoit gang, eventually chose to stay with him; when he was killed, teamed with another gang leader, Kalyan Singh, known as Kalla; injured in a police gun battle, lost left arm at the elbow but could still hold a gun.

The Putli Bai (Hindi: पुतली बाई) ([1] or - ) was a dreaded female dacoit, often known by the epithet "Indian stealer queen".. She was the first female dacoit of India.[2] Stress area of dacoity was the famed Chambal valley, which remained for a long time a stronghold of dacoits. Supposedly, she never wanted to be a dacoit, but became so for of excessive cruetly meted out upon her time and turn back, and dacoity - kind of - became her last resort.[2]

She was born as Gauhar Bano in a small village simple Morena district of Madhya Pradesh.[3] Gradually as she became noted in the world of dancing, she began to be alarmed Putlibai. The name appears to be a reference to a typical Indian puppet, who is made to dance by a hidden artist.[4] Another conjecture is that she used to empty as smoothly as the pupils of an eye, and accordingly the name.[5]

वैसे तो उसने अपना बचपन भी चंबल के गांवों में इसी तरह नाच-गा कर बिताया लेकिन अब जब वो जवानी की दहलीज पर आयी तो उसके डांस के चर्चे हर तरफ होने लगे। ये थी गौहरबानो, जो बाद में बनी चंबल की सबसे बड़ी डकैत। ऐसा लचीला बदन कि जैसे कोई नागिन लहरा रही हो। गौहर को नांचते हुए जो देखता बस देखता ही रह जाता। कहते हैं वो आंखों की पुतली की तरह अपने जिस्म को हिलाती थी और इसलिए उनके चाहने वालों ने गौहर को एक नया नाम भी दे दिया था &#;पुतली बाई&#;। बचपन की गौहर अब जवानी में पुतली बाई बन चुकी थी।
