José Rizal
José Rizal () was a national hero of the Philippines and the first Asian nationalist. He expressed the growing national consciousness of many Filipinos who opposed Spanish colonial tyranny and aspired to attain democratic rights.
José Rizal was born in Calamba, Laguna, on June 19, , to a well-to-do family. He studied at the Jesuit Ateneo Municipal in Manila and won many literary honors and prizes. He obtained a bachelor of arts degree with highest honors in For a time he studied at the University of Santo Tomas, and in he left for Spain to enter the Central University of Madrid, where he completed his medical and humanistic studies.

In Spain, Rizal composed his sociohistorical novel Noli me tangere (), which reflected the sufferings of his countrymen under Spanish feudal despotism and their rebellion. His mother had been a victim of gross injustice at the hands of a vindictive Spanish official of the guardia civil. Because Rizal satirized the ruling friar caste and severely criticized the iniquitous social structure in the Philippines, his book was banned and its readers punished. Early Life
Jose Rizal named Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda Quintos was born on June 19, in Calamba, Laguna, in the Spanish Philippines. Rizal was born to father Teodora Morales Alonso Realonda y Quintos and mother Francisco Engracio Rizal Mercado y Alejandra II as the seventh of eleven children. Rizal’s family was very wealthy, they were farmers who granted lease of their estate (called hacienda) and an accompanying rice farm by the Dominicans. Rizal is a descendant of Domingo Lam-Co, a Chinese entrepreneur who sailed to the Philippines from China in the mid 17th century.
At the age of three, his mother taught him his alphabet and by five he was able to read and write. At an early age he started to show inclinations of becoming an artist. He started to make sketches and pencil drawings that astounded his family and by age 8 he was already into poetry, he wrote the poem “Sa Aking Mga Kabata” which revolved around the love of one’s language. José P. Rizal (full name: José Prota[1] Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda) (June 19, – December 30, ) was a Filipinopolymath, nationalist and the most prominent advocate for reforms in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. Educational Foundations
The Mercado family enjoyed relative wealth as landowners who rented the land of their hacienda to the Dominican friars in Laguna. Hence, education was a priority for the Mercado family and young Jose Protacio was sent to learn from Justiniano Aquino Cruz, a tutor from nearby Binan, Laguna. But the education of a small town and a tutor did not sufficiently quench the young man’s thirst for knowledge and soon, the family began to make preparations for his admission to the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, in the capital of the Philippines.
