Artus Van Briggle () was an American artist best known for founding Van Briggle Pottery, which, at the time of its closure, was the oldest continuously operating art pottery in the United States.

Van Briggle initially pursued painting. He attended the Cincinnati Art School and even had works accepted into the prestigious Paris Salon. However, his artistic path shifted towards ceramics after working at Rookwood Pottery, a leading American art pottery company.

 

While studying in Paris, he became fascinated with ceramic glazes from the Chinese Ming dynasty, and sought to replicate them himself.

However, after a diagnosis of tuberculosis, Van Briggle moved to Colorado Springs in It was there that he established Van Briggle Pottery in The company became known for its innovative designs and glazes with signature satin matte finishes and beautiful colors, often inspired by Art Nouveau design.

Despite his short life, Artus Van Briggle left a lasting impact on the American art pottery movement. Van Briggle Pottery continued operation until the mids, producing pieces that reflected the original designs and techniques established by Artus.

As a young child, Artus Van Briggle displayed a talent in artistry skills, growing up with his family of artisans in Felicity, Ohio.  After moving to Cincinnati, known at the time for hosting many American ceramics firms, Artus would become an apprentice at Avon Pottery under Karl Langenbeck and by , he continued onto Rookwood Pottery, refining his skills in painting, modeling clay, and making molds.

After impressing at Rookwood, the talented Artus was sent to Europe in to study at the Académie Julian and then the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he met his future wife, Anne Lawrence Gregory, and explored an interest in fourteenth century Chinese Ming glazes. Van Briggle returned to Cincinnati and Rookwood Pottery, where he refined his style, inspired by his interest in Chinese glazes.  The resulting works of his new matte glaze pottery proved popular but unfortunately, the celebration of his professional success was cut short with a discovery of a diagnosis of tuberculosis that was not improving. As a result, Artus and his wife left for Colorado Springs in hopes the warm temperatures would improve his health.

Artus Van Briggle was born in Felicity, Ohio on March 21, He moved to Cincinnati in , and he apprenticed at Avon Pottery. He Joined Rookwood Pottery in He was sent to Paris to Study for 3 years at the Ecole de Beaux Arts and the Julian Academy. He began decorating pottery at Rookwood in , but left in for Colorado Springs due to poor health. It was there that he created his own pottery company, Van Briggle Pottery.

Artus's success was short lived, for he died on July 4, at the age of His career was short, and his works are considered rare. At Rookwood, most of his work was highly detailed portrait work in Standard Glaze, while his own work was much more organic in nature. Collector interest in his work is extremely high, and his pieces are highly prized.
